I suspect that my child needs special education services. I verbally asked for an evaluation. I was told that parents can no longer make requests for their child to be evaluated. Is this true?
NO! There are many things in the law, such as Child Find, where your child under age 5 can be evaluated for free. Also, if your child has met eligibility, they are re-evaluated every 3 years or the child can be evaluated at the request of the parent.
Address a letter to the school principal. Hand it to him/her in person or send it certified mail. In the letter, be sure to state what your concerns are, where you feel your child is struggling and that you are formally requesting an evaluation for your child to determine eligibility for special education.
