This is a wonderful letter that a 3rd grade teacher sends home on the first day. I love the hopeful tone this teacher displays.
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Welcome to a brand new school year! I look forward to spending the next 180 school days with your child in the seas of learning! As we embark on this third grade journey it is important to remember that we need all hands on deck to make this a truly successful voyage.
It is important that at this stage in your child’s development we encourage his or her independence and allow enjoyment of new experiences. Give your student responsibilities and keep them accountable. Expect much and they will perform!
We enter this school year knowing some of the difficulties ahead. I am confident in my abilities, as well as in my support staff that we are equipped and excited to work with your students with varying abilities, gifts and interests.
Attached to this letter you will find an overview of what third grade will entail: thematic units, projects, and curriculum plans. There will be an assorted variation of activities within each theme and choice for your student. They are being invited to be an active participant in their education and make choices to drive their learning. Encourage them and allow them to explore independently!
Please note that throughout the year I will inform you of important meetings and school events. Please be looking in student agendas daily for key information. If you return your information sheet to me and include your email address, you will also receive reminders via email. Family involvement and collaboration is so important for the success of your student and our school.
Each student is complex and important, and I understand every family dynamic is unique. What works for one student may not work for another, so if you find yourself concerned with your child’s progress please let me know. It is my pleasure to assist you in making decisions, addressing concerns, or dealing with issues that arise throughout the year, please contact me either by phone or email. I am available to meet everyday after school from 2:00-3:00, or other times with advanced scheduling.
Also enclosed with this letter are two forms for you to consider: Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program and XYZ tutoring, both of which provide one-on-one weekly meetings with an adult who can identify, relate, tutor, and be a constant figure in your child’s life. If you feel this is an amenity your student would benefit from please fill out the form and return it to me as soon as possible. I can not guarantee entrance into the programs, but will do my best to connect them with a mentor in a timely manner.
It is my pleasure and privilege to be a part of your lives as I continue on the educational journey of your child.
